Students at Bonham Elementary School will be the recipients of clothingdonated to the Dress the Fir to Prevent the Burr Christmas Trees in theRichardson Library at Hardin-Simmons University. The trees are currently beingdecorated with bows, with donations from students, faculty, and staff to begin nextMonday, November 12, 2012. Elizabeth Worley, associate director for public services in thelibrary, says they are calling the trees Sock Trees, but any donation of newwinter items will be greatly appreciated. {{more}} Worley says, “The library has been working for the past couple of yearsto reach out to students with events like the Easter egg hunts, the Halloweencostume contest and flash mob, and the finals week play dough creations.” “This year, when I was searching for an activity the library could dothis fall semester, I came across the idea that has been done by a national honorsociety, gathering winter wear to decorate Christmas trees and donating it to aworthy cause,” says Worley. The idea is really three-fold, “It will help to warm some children thiswinter, it gets the students and campus involved in a project, and it willhopefully bring people into the library who may not come that often,” she says. We contacted Bonham Elementary because we already have a longstandingrelationship with the school, says Shannon Maynard, educational technologyservices coordinator for the library. “The connection really started throughthe HSU Irvin School of Education,” says Maynard. Shannon’s mom, Dr. Renee Collins, associate professor of education and chairof the HSU Department of Educational Studies, and her dad, Pastor Bob Collins, collaboratedwith Bonham’s administration and faculty/staff members during various communityand family events on the campus. Worley says Bonham fifth-graders came to HSU this past spring for atour of the campus. “When they came to the library, we talked to them about interestingresources in our library.” Maynard says, “It’s exciting that the Richardson Library is helping outwith winter wear for the students!!! I hope everyone will help out and donateitems so there is more than enough for everyone. “The Richardson Library staff and possibly student workers will deliverthe items on Thursday, December 13, 2012. The principal of Bonham and a fewteachers have mentioned to me they plan to stop by the library to check out thetrees and see what we have going on. They are also extremely excited about thisevent and want to donate items as well.”Thelibrary will be accepting donations of new winter items for the Bonham studentsbeginning Monday, November 12, and running until December 12.
