Service with a Smile plus Great Prices

There is acommon misconception that if you buy something from a BIG store you are goingto save BIG dollars.  Walmart hasbrainwashed you into this belief.  Sadlyit’s not always true.  I want to enlightenyou and help you not only save money but get added value with your dollars.   As the ownerof The Paint Center, I know I have many items priced less than the big boxstores like Lowe’s and Home Depot. Recently a new customer made the comment “Hey you guys are a lot cheaperon tray liners than Home Depot.  I wouldhave never dreamed that?”  I quicklyresponded that we have lots of items priced less than the “boxes’.  That comment inspired me to start a two weekdaily posting on our Facebook page called “They charged me what?”.  {{more}}Each day I picked out random items and listed3 prices, Home Depot, Lowe’s and ours. We were anywhere from 5%-60% less on these common items.  Even we were amazed.  In fact, word got out about our little rantand two national trade magazines did stories about it.    After acouple of weeks my bookkeeper, Annette Evatt, suggested I purchase a bunch ofitems from each store and place them in clear containers for all of ourcustomers to see, just like the grocery stores do.  Brilliant idea!  So I went to both stores and purchased 16items which are identical or as close to identical as we could find.  Hey, a tray liner is a tray liner right?  Here are the results:               Lowe’s           $ 120.36             Home Depot  $ 115.99             Ours               $   91.73   You wouldspend 31% more if you shopped at Lowe’s. Here’s the kicker, while at Lowe’s twice gathering prices, the onlyemployee in the department walked past me three times and never even spoke tome.  I was not hiding my pad andpencil.  Plus, he was trying to wait on 4customers at the same time!  Time is yourmost precious commodity.  We can have youin and out in minutes.  At our store wenormally have at least 3 people ready to help you with your projects.  Between those 3 people they have more than 50years experience in the paint business. The box stores are lucky if they have an employee with 50 weeksexperience.  We can offer valuable adviceto help you succeed with your project and you won’t pay extra for it.    My story isnot the only one in town.  Many small, locally owned businesses can out price and out service the “box” storeseveryday.  We are all fighting the samebattle.  You as the consumer have been”tricked” into thinking big is always better. Home Depot is reported to have spent over a billion dollars onadvertising in 2010.  They are paying forthese ads with your dollars, dollars which go right out of town.  You can have a dramatic impact on your localeconomy by purchasing items from smaller stores and at the same time save moneyand get more help.  As I learned in myDale Carnegie course, always try to think win-win!      Let’s getback to the days when you walked into a store and someone actually wanted tohelp you and was truly thankful for your business.
