Minda St. Church of Christ Announces the Retirement of Tony E. Roach Sr., After 37 Years of Faithful Service!

After 37 years of faithful service as the Resident Evangelist of the Minda St. Congregation, Dr. Anthony E. Roach Sr. announced that he will be retiring on October 30, 2016. {{more}} Dr. and Mrs. Candyce Roach planted the Minda St. Congregation on October 26, 1979. Tony has served as the Senior Minister ever since the congregation was established. He was trained for 29 years by his Spiritual father, Dr. John S. Winston Sr. in a Sound Doctrine Training Program. He came to Abilene in 1977 to earn his Master’s degree from Abilene Christian University. Dr. Roach went on to earn his Doctor of Divinity degree and was the first African American to earn a Doctor’s degree from ACU in the history of the University. He admits, “It was not his intention to stay in Abilene after he received his degrees but obviously God had different plans for my life.” Eventually, Dr. Roach and his wife opened the doors of the Minda St. congregation, one of Abilene’s first truly multi-cultural congregations when it was not popular–the rest is history. Under Dr. Roach’s leadership, the Minda St. Congregation has experienced the favor of God in many different areas. In the area of Spiritual Growth, which has always been the focus of the Minda St. Congregation, thousands of souls have been baptized into the body of Christ. Over the years, individuals and families of many different ethnic groups and cultures have been taught the Gospel and have been Spiritually trained and strengthened while attending Minda. Many of these people have gone throughout the world and are currently serving in various leadership capacities today. Since Abilene is a transit city due to Dyess AFB and the five colleges and universities, Dr. Roach and the Elders at Minda St. decided a long time ago that part of their purpose as a local congregation was to equip members to grow up Spiritually then release them to go out and teach the Gospel wherever God chose to use them in His Kingdom. According to Dr. Roach, “That evangelistic approach has proven to be very successful.” Under his ministry, the 200 member-congregation has trained many leaders. During the last 37 years, Dr. Roach and the Elders have maintained a “Sound Doctrine Training Program” and employed a Biblical Model of the Government Organization and Development of the Local Church.” which has been successful in the training and equipping of Evangelists, Elders, Deacons, Preachers, Campus Ministers, Youth Ministers, Music Ministers, and their spouses. Currently, Minda has eight Elders and their wives, and several Deacons and their wives, and most of them have been serving for over 25 years. In addition to maintaining the Minda congregation, these programs have helped to ordain 20 Gospel preachers and ministers who are now serving in various congregations throughout the United States. Minda St. is still giving birth to preachers today! When it comes to physical assets, the Minda St. has also been blessed with tremendous favor from God. Thirty-seven years ago, the Congregation started with nothing! However, over the years, it has accumulated and paid for, more than 4.5 Million dollars in assets of land and buildings. The 16,600 square ft. Minda St. Church building has a 400-member seating capacity worship center, with the capabilities of being expanded to an 800-member capacity. The facility is equipped with 16 classrooms, a gymnasium, a full kitchen, 4 rest rooms, and various offices. The Congregation also has a 64 capacity children’s day care facility named, “The Minda St. Child Development Center” which has been in existence over 17 years.” The congregation also has a 7000 square ft. “New Self-Love Family Life Center” and almost 17 acres of land on Minda Street, T& P. Lane, and on South 11th and Highway 36. Needless to say, Minda has been highly favored and tremendously blessed by God during its 37-year existence. After his retirement as Resident Evangelist on October 30th, Dr. Roach will focus on his writing career. He will also continue his national and international ministry of conducting God’s Love Bank Spiritual Growth workshops, seminars, revivals, conferences, and research institutes. The God’s Love Bank program is a systematic framework for thinking, a value-centered program for living, and an easy-to-understand curriculum for teaching the Gospel through the core values of Jesus Christ. Dr. Roach will also continue his workshops on the Biblical Model of the Government Organization and Development of the Local Church, which is a training program that teaches Evangelist, Elders, and Deacons to work together as a T-E-A-M by each role staying in their lane to fulfill their purpose, and to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. When Dr. Roach retires, on October 30th, Bro. Ian Nickerson will succeed him as the Resident Evangelist of the Minda St. Congregation. Bro. Nickerson is a Spiritual son of Dr. Roach and the Minda St. Church. He was added to the Minda St. Congregation 25 years ago, and he has been in training under Dr. Roach for over 20 years. He has also been a student of the Sound Doctrine Training Program at the Minda St. Church for many years. While in training under the tutelage of Dr. Roach and Elders at Minda, Minister Nickerson served churches in Denver Colorado for four years, in Midland Odessa for two years, and in Big Springs Texas for 3 years. Minister Nickerson is currently serving as the Assistant Minister to Dr. Roach at the Minda St. Congregation until his installation service on October 30, 2016. Brother Nickerson recently earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biblical Text from Abilene Christian University. Nickerson says, “My plan is to earn my Masters of Divinity degree, and finally to earn my Doctors of Divinity degree without stopping until I complete all of my education.” Ian is married to Sherita Nickerson who currently works as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator/Director of Compliance at Abilene Christian University. Ian and his wife Sherita have one 5-year-old daughter name Iana. There will be a “Changing of The Guard Celebration” on October 30, 2016 at the Minda St. Church building. During this historical event, Dr. Roach will install Minister Ian Nickerson into the role of Resident Evangelist and afterward the Elders along with the Minda St. congregation and Evangelist Nickerson will bestow upon Dr. Roach the honor of being Minister Emeritus. The designation of Minister Emeritus is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an Evangelist who has served with distinction for many years and who has discharged his duties with immeasurable distinction to serve in that capacity for the rest of his life. The public is invited to this auspicious occasion. The theme of the occasion will be “GREATER WORKS THAN THESE, SHALL YOU DO!” Dr. Olu Shabazz the minister for the Harlem Church of Christ in New York City will be the guest speaker and the Minda St. Choruses will be performing at the banquet. Service times for Sunday’s events on October 30, 2016 are as follows. The Bible Classes will begin at 9:00 AM, the Worship Service will begin at 10:00 AM, and the Changing of the Guard Celebration will take place during the Banquet in the Church Multi-Purpose Center at 1:00 PM.
