AbileneJohn Wallace Wheeler, 80, passed away early Thursday morning, October 24, 2013. A funeral service will be held at 10:00am Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at Baker Heights Church of Christ, Steve Smith officiating, burial, with military honors, will follow in the Texas State Veterans cemetery, directed by Fry~Bartlett Funeral Home, Tuscola. A time of visitation for John will be held from 5 to 7pm Monday, October 28, 2013 at Baker Heights Church of Christ.John was born in southern Jones County on August 27, 1933 to John and Cleo Wheeler. During his childhood years his parents moved several times before settling in Noodle where they farmed. {{more}}He graduated from Noodle high school in 1952 and worked in farming and construction. In 1953, he joined the United States Air Force and reported to Lackland Air force base for basic training. He served in the in the Air Force until 1962. During his time in the Air Force John received training as a medic which prepared him as an emergency and surgical technician. The military was never far from John, and he joined the Army National Guard and worked as an Army Medic Corpsman, Missile Equipment Engineer, Operator/Mechanic, and Radar Operator. He retired from the National Guard in 1990.He married Mary France Miller on August 29, 1964 in Denton. They welcomed three children in their 49 years of marriage. John was a faithful member of Baker Heights Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife Mary, son John David and wife Jeana Marie of Clyde, daughter Sharon Leigh Wheeler of Abilene, brothers Franklin Smith and wife Bonnie, Charles Adry Wheeler and wife Wanda, sisters Willa Mae Tarpley, and Joyce Saylors and husband Jimmie, three grandchildren, Brian, Dakota, and Alex.He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Susan Lynn, and sisters Cleo Hamilton and Sara Wheeler.
