HSU Alumni Return 50 Years Later

HSU Alumni Return 50 Years Later

Golden Reunion Starts Monday Students who graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in 1963 will remember a brand new Behrens Auditorium, completed when many of the class members were just starting their junior year. When these same graduates return April 15 – 16, 2013, to celebrate their 50th year since graduation, Behrens is one of several buildings that will have a familiar feel. HSU will welcome graduates of the class of 1963 during the upcoming two-day Golden Reunion with a special concert of the “World Famous” Cowboy Band, a bus tour of the campus, and the 75th annual Founders Day Observance will remind Golden Graduates and current students of the people who walked The Forty Acres before them. While HSU is often referred to by the nickname, Golden Grads will see that the campus has expanded to a whopping 220 acres. Graduates will also be able to see the stained-glass ceiling that was revealed in Caldwell Hall during a renovation after they graduated. {{more}} The 1963 Planning Committee of the Golden Reunion consists of 11 former classmates who work in conjunction with the HSU Alumni Office to create a memorable 50th reunion. Members of the planning committee have been eagerly reminding the class that they will have this reunion only once. One of the events will be a special class reunion program in chapel with current students, featuring ’63 grad Claude Dollins, chairman of The Dollins Group, and a nationally known speaker and human performance coach. The Dollins Group brought national attention to West Texas during the 2003 and 2004 Ethical Leadership Conferences. Dollins teases about the chapel program, saying he will honor what he learned from his HSU speech professor, Miss Elliot, “Be there, be brief, and be gone.” The Reunion Program and the Founders Day Observance begin at 9:30 a.m. in Logsdon Chapel, Tuesday, April 16. One of the highlights of the reunion is the bus tour of the campus, which starts at 2 p.m., Monday, April 15, at Logsdon School of Theology, and ends with the Cowboy Band concert in the rehearsal hall at 4 p.m. Band alumni are welcomed to sit in with their instruments a play a few of the numbers with the band. Another highlight of the reunion comes early as grads start to gather in the Dyess Welcome Center at 10:30 a.m. Monday. The Welcome Center is a former women’s dormitory. Grads, especially those who lived on the first floor, will go in search of their old dorm room, often regaling staff members in the Enrollment Services offices with tales of Hunter Hall. HSU alumni relations director, Britt Jones, says one of the interesting things about the Class of ’63 is the remarkable number of people who are alumni award recipients. One of those is the former commander of the United States Army Band, Col. Bryan Shelburne, who was named as a Distinguished Alumni in 1990 and inducted into the HSU Hall of leaders in 2011. Many other class members serve, or have served as members of the Board of Trustees, the Board of Development, the School of Music Foundation, and the Alumni Association.
