Ryan Clift grew up around homebuilding. His grandfather was a homebuilder and Ryan grew up watching and helping his grandfather build homes in East Texas. But he hasn’t always built homes. Ryan graduated with degrees in both Accounting and Finance but decided accounting wasn’t where he wanted to be so moved into mortgage lending and now owns Boulevard Mortgage Group. Ryan began building homes on his own in 2008 and then moved to Abilene in 2009 after meeting his wife who is from Abilene. Ryan and Traci have been married almost five years and have two precious daughters, two years and 9 months old. The day we met in Ryan’s office, the girls kept Traci quite busy. When asked if she helps choose colors and decorate the homes Ryan builds, Traci smiled and replied, “I will make suggestions if he asks me, but he really has a great eye for color and design, so he doesn’t usually need my help.” It remains to be seen whether either of his daughters will follow in their dad’s and grandfather’s footsteps and enter the home building industry but the oldest loves to build legos with Ryan. {{more}}At the time of this interview, a new home was nearing completion and he was looking forward to starting the one slated for the Parade of Homes. Early in his career, he focused mainly on custom homes. Now, however, he has “more specs than customs.” Weather permitting; it generally takes “three to four months to complete a home in the 2000 to 2500 square-foot range and a little longer for those ranging from 3000 to 4000 square feet.”His mother owns a flooring store in Texarkana, which helps him keep up to date with new flooring trends. Ryan stays up to date by following trends and themes online and through Home building publications. Ryan enjoys designing homes and often incorporates ideas from one plan into another. All his CAD work is done off site, and a trusted Realtor also offers suggestions and ideas.Ryan takes pride in his homes. “I build a home as if I am going to live in it.” His homes are energy efficient and include tankless hot water heaters. In the long run, they are more energy efficient and pay for themselves quickly. He visits his home sites daily, especially during the beginning phases. Since he moved to Abilene not knowing anyone in the business, he relied on recommendations from those he met through church and through the Emmaus community to help locate reliable craftsmen. When asked what one of the oddest things he has ever had to put in a home we found he was once asked to install a two-way mirror in the center wall of a double shower. Interesting. One of the funniest things he ever had to do on a jobsite: “Chase a neighborhood dog off of wet cement!” Oh, my! Clift Construction provides standard 1-2-10 warranties on homes and Ryan will always be as close as his phone. See more information at: www.cliftconstruction.com
