Black History Month to be Celebrated with Lift Every Voice Concert

SMA‘s APPLAUSE Music Series will present its second annual LIFT EVERY VOICE Concert Saturday, February 6 at 7:30 pm at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. Local Choirs, local soloists and guest artists Robert Willams and Devlon Jones will once again present the inspirational music of Gospel and Praise music. Rev. Walton Lyte of Big Spring will conduct the Community Choir comprised of singers from Greater Zion Baptist Church and Mt. Rose Baptist Church. Rev. Lyte will also play piano for the choir as well as for many of the soloists. Rev. Robert Carey is Pastor of Greater Zion and Rev. Tommy Jackson is Pastor of Mt. Rose. Mt. Rose Youth Praise Team will be featured again also. Mt. Rose Praise Team is directed by Youth Minister First Lady Senoria Jackson; Choir Director Hazel Pimpton; Assistant Choir Director Freda Leyba; Youth Advisor Earline Gerst; Praise Team Choreographer Mia Jackson. {{more}}Annie Franklin will be a featured soloist. She has worked as a nurses’ aide many years at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. Her angelic voice and sweet spirit has been a special source of comfort and healing for patients and their families. Last year she was featured on the big stage for the LIFT EVERY VOICE Concert, and dozens of people came to her afterwards to thank her for having been such an inspiration at the hospital all those years. They were happy to know her name and give her the applause she so richly deserved. Miss Franklin gives all the glory to God. Robert Williams was raised in Sweetwater. He was an athletic standout as well as a choir member who made it to state in UIL competitions. He was a voice scholarship student at Amarillo College with Mila Gibson, another Sweetwater native and founder of Amarillo Opera, a million dollar a year, professional opera company. He performed with Amarillo Opera. Then he studied voice with Dr. Eldon Black at Angelo State University and joined the Army. He continues to sing for revivals and programs in the DFW area and was a guest artist on last year’s Lift Every Voice Concert in Sweetwater. He is coming back by popular demand. Devlon Jones is a popular Gospel singer from Amarillo. He has sung for dignitaries and is well known in the Texas Panhandle for his unusual wide vocal range, high energy and tremendous talent. He was an All-State tenor in high school and has sung for Amarillo Opera, Amarillo Little Theatre, many churches and organizations since. Community Choir members are Mapearl Atkis, Gwendolym Boyd, Terri Brown, Louise Carey, Isabell Williams, Harriet Washington, Doris Jackson, Mary Samples, Jimmie Bender, Eula Bender, Freda Leyba, Linda Sweet, LaVerne Williams, Gladys Gerst, Gilda Gerst, Teresa West, Gladys Williams, Sarah Reddic.
