Abilene Wednesday Rotary Club to Host Awards Luncheon for AISD Students

ABILENE, Texas – The Abilene Wednesday Rotary Club will be hosting an awards lunch for fifty-two AISD graduates who are participants in a federally-funded initiative that provides assistance to unaccompanied youth.  During the lunch to beheld on Wednesday, May 15th at Sharon’s Barbeque, graduates will be recognized for overcoming obstacles to achieve the successful completion of their high school careers.  In January 2013, it was reported that there were 860 students identified as homeless in the AISD.  The assistance program, under the leadership of Heather Melchor, provides basic needs such as food, housing, shelter, and transportation, as well as academic tutoring and personal counseling.  {{more}} The Wednesday Rotary Club’s involvement with AISD began with its annual service project to purchase and deliver dictionaries to students in targeted elementary schools.  The dictionary project and the AISD unaccompanied youth project, in partnership with Funeral Director’s Life Insurance Corporation ,fulfills one of Rotary’s six areas of service, basic education and literacy.   The Abilene Wednesday Rotary Club was formed in 1984 with the motto “Service Above Self” and is committed to serving the Abilene community and promoting peace and goodwill in our community and around the world.  For more information, visit http://abilenerotary.com.
